What is liposuction?
Liposuction uses suction to remove fat from specific areas of the body, such as the stomach, hips, thighs, buttocks, arms or neck. Liposuction also shapes these areas, that process is called contouring. The aim is to alter body shape, and the results are generally long-lasting, providing you maintain a healthy weight. Liposuction procedures works best in people who are not overweight and in areas where the skin is firm and elastic. Other names for liposuction include lipoplasty and body contouring. Liposuction isn’t considered an overall weight-loss method or a weight-loss alternative. People who are overweight can lose more weight through diet and exercise or through other kinds of surgery than with liposuction.
What liposuction can treat?
Liposuction removes fat from areas of the body that don't respond to diet and exercise. These include the:
-
Abdomen.
-
Upper arms.
-
Buttocks.
-
Calves and ankles.
-
Chest and back.
-
Hips and thighs.
-
Chin and neck.
In addition, liposuction can sometimes be used to reduce extra breast tissue in men — a condition called gynecomastia. When you gain weight, fat cells get bigger. Liposuction lowers the number of fat cells in a specific area. The amount of fat removed depends on what the area looks like and the volume of fat. The resulting shape changes are usually permanent as long as your weight remains the same.
After liposuction, the skin molds itself to the new shapes of the treated areas. If you have good skin tone and elasticity, the skin usually looks smooth. If your skin is thin and not elastic, the skin in the treated areas may look loose. Liposuction doesn't help with dimpled skin from cellulite or other differences in the surface of the skin. Liposuction also doesn't remove stretch marks.
To have liposuction, you must be in good health without conditions that could make surgery more difficult. These can include blood flow problems, coronary artery disease, diabetes or a weak immune system.

Risks
As with any surgery, liposuction has risks. These risks include bleeding and a reaction to anesthesia. Other risks specific to liposuction include:
-
Contour irregularities. Your skin may appear bumpy, wavy or withered due to uneven fat removal, poor skin elasticity and scarring. These changes may be permanent.
-
Fluid buildup. Temporary pockets of fluid, called seromas, can form under the skin. They may need to be drained using a needle.
-
Numbness. You may feel temporary or permanent numbness in the treated areas. Nerves in the area also may feel irritated.
-
Infection. Skin infections are rare but possible. A severe skin infection may be life-threatening.
-
Internal puncture. Rarely, if the thin tube used during surgery penetrates too deeply, it may puncture an internal organ. This may require emergency surgery to repair the organ.
-
Fat embolism. Pieces of fat may break away and become trapped in a blood vessel. They then may gather in the lungs or travel to the brain. A fat embolism is a medical emergency.
-
Kidney and heart problems. When large volumes of liposuction are performed, fluid shifts. This can cause possibly life-threatening kidney, heart and lung problems.
-
Lidocaine toxicity. Lidocaine is a medicine that is used to help manage pain. It's often given with fluids injected during liposuction. Although lidocaine usually is safe, lidocaine toxicity sometimes can occur, causing serious heart and central nervous system problems.
The risk of complications rises if the surgeon works on larger body surfaces or does multiple procedures during the same operation. Talk to the surgeon about how these risks apply to you.
What are Post Liposuction Lymphatic Massages?
A post liposuction lymphatic massage is a type of mild massage that promotes lymph fluid circulation throughout the body. The lymphatic system’s fluid aids in the removal of waste and pollutants from the body’s tissues. Lymph fluid can build up as a result of certain medical problems. People with lymphedema, fibromyalgia, and other illnesses, as well as those who have recently undergone some types of cosmetic surgery, can benefit from lymphatic drainage massages.
A post liposuction lymphatic massage is frequently recommended by plastic surgeons during the recovery phase following cosmetic liposuction. This specialized form of massage is generally believed to decrease recovery time and improve results, by reducing post-surgical swelling and fibrosis (scar tissue formation).

What are the benefits of a Post Liposuction Lymphatic Massage?
A lymphatic massage is a specialist treatment that aids in the effective functioning of the lymphatic system. The treated region is given extra care when done after surgery to speed up healing and offer smoother outcomes. Lymphatic massage has a number of advantages, including the following.
-
Reducing swelling and preventing the collection of fluid
-
Promotion of toxin flushing
-
Prevents the formation of fibrosis and scar tissue
-
Improves blood and lymphatic fluid circulation
-
Stimulates the healing of wounds
-
Often reduces discomfort
As the body reacts to the stressful action of the insertion of cannulas and removal of fat, tissue might generate extra lymphatic fluid after a treatment like thigh liposuction or mons pubis liposuction. Even with less invasive treatments, some individuals may have tissue disturbance, resulting in edema (a build-up of extra fluid). In some situations, pockets of fibrosis might develop, resulting in scar tissue that is rigid. A skilled massage therapist gently manipulates the skin and underlying tissues in the regions of lymph production to enhance circulation, facilitate drainage, and promote healing during lymphatic massage. The massage itself is usually mild and light, and the patient should find it soothing and comforting. A lymphatic massage is made much more enjoyable by the reduction in pain and edema that occurs soon thereafter.

What is a Brazilian Butt Lift?
A Brazilian butt lift is a procedure that removes excess fat from one area of the body and injects it into the buttocks. In many cases, the fat is removed from a “problem area,” such as the hips, thighs or lower abdomen, so the results improve the aesthetics of the entire lower body. The American Society of Plastic Surgeons also refers to this technique as buttock augmentation through the use of fat grafting. For a Brazilian butt lift to be successful, you must have enough excess fat in your hips, thighs or lower abdomen to remove and transfer to your butt, as well as have good skin tone in your hips and buttocks, since the procedure does not treat loose or saggy skin.

What happens during Brazilian butt lift surgery?
Brazilian butt lift surgery is usually performed as an outpatient procedure under general anesthesia. The surgeon uses liposuction to remove fat from your lower body; the extracted fat is then purified and injected into specific points on the buttocks to achieve the desired shape and size. Pain is usually minimal, and you may have some tenderness, but prescription pain medication is rarely needed.
Following the procedure, you should be able to return to light daily activity and work within 10 to 14 days. However, you will not be able sit, lie down or put pressure directly on your buttocks for about two weeks. You’ll need to sleep on your stomach, and either lie on your stomach, kneel or stand during daily activity.
After a couple of weeks, your surgeon will give you the green light to sit in a modified position with a supportive “donut” seat or pillow under your thighs to prevent pressure on your buttocks. Generally, you can return to sitting without restrictions about eight weeks after the procedure.
Full recovery takes about six months. At this point, all swelling has subsided, and you can see the final results of the procedure. The results should last for many years, but it is important to maintain a stable weight without significant loss or gain, which can affect the outcome.
